Philadelphia under a hazy purple sunset. An incoming train crosses Ben Franklin Bridge.

We love Philadelphia. The historic city has thriving arts and music scene, and charming accommodations like those found at The Independent Hotel. Here’s what we’re excited about in the City of Brotherly Love over the coming months.

Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest

Every summer, the Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest takes over Penn’s Landing on the Delaware River. From June to September, head to this hangout for free roller skating and enjoy food from the locally-beloved Garces Group at the pop-up Boathouse in between skates and trips to the video arcade.

Hitting the Parks

Philadelphia has a number of exceptional parks, where travelers and locals alike enjoy sunny days. Take the kids to play on the ropes course a the Morris Arboretum in Chestnut Hill, or visit the massive Smith Memorial Playground just west of Brewerytown. Smaller, urban parks near The Independent Hotel in Philadelphia like Rittenhouse Square and Serger Park offer grassy respites to watch the stately city surrounding.

New Art Exhibits

Check out new exhibitions at the revered Barnes Foundation like Nari Ward: Sun Splasheda look at the found-object art of this controversial Jamaican artist. The Philadelphia Museum of Art will also have new exhibits, including a look at the enormous private collection from local business moguls Keith and Katherine Sachs.

Phillies Games

Supporting the Phillies baseball team is a local necessity in Philadelphia, and summer months bring hometown games to the gorgeous Citizens Bank Park in South Philadelphia. Watch the franchise compete for the National League East title, as you enjoy local beers and peppy antics from the Philly Phanatic.

New Al Fresco Dining

Philly is known for having a deep roster of restaurants with outdoor seating, making it one of the country’s best places to drink and dine in the summer. It’s a general consensus that Talula’s Garden the city’s finest, with farm-to-table dishes like Berkshire pork belly and goat cheese gnocchi coming out to picnic tables on a patio decked out with plant life.
