A Road Trip Up the California Coast
Driving north from San Diego to Monterey Bay takes you past classic boardwalks, packed surf towns, and long stretches of open shoreline. Along the way, the route offers plenty of chances to trade the crowds for coffee in a converted railroad depot, lunch at a roadside seafood counter, or a walk along the bluffs.
Carté Hotel in San Diego's Little Italy, The Ambrose Hotel in Santa Monica, and The Sanctuary Beach Resort in Marina give travelers three places to stay along the route. Start with San Diego's restaurants and waterfront, spend a night in Santa Monica before continuing north, and finish beside the dunes and beaches of Monterey Bay.
The drive covers roughly 475 miles between the three properties, with plenty of room for detours. While US-101 offers an easy, direct run inland, following the winding coastal stretches of Highway 1 through Big Sur adds travel time, so keep an eye on local road conditions and give yourself an open schedule for the drive.
